How to Perform Durva Ganpati Puja
- 1 Before starting the puja, ensure your puja area is clean. Gather all necessary items: an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha, Durva grass (preferably 21 strands), red flowers, sandalwood paste (chandan), kumkum, agarbatti (incense sticks), a ghee lamp (diya), sweets or fruits for Naivedya, and water in a small pot with a spoon. Take a bath and wear clean clothes.
- 2 Sit comfortably facing the east or north, cross-legged, with a calm mind. Light the ghee lamp and agarbatti, placing them to the right of the idol. Now, with folded hands, take a moment to silently state your intention for performing this puja, asking Lord Ganesha to bless your family and remove any obstacles.
- 3 Place a little chandan and kumkum on Lord Ganesha's idol or picture. Offer a red flower to Him. With folded hands, respectfully invite Lord Ganesha to be present in your home and accept your worship, believing truly that He has arrived.
- 4 Take the small pot of water and spoon. Offer a few drops of water to Lord Ganesha by gently sprinkling it near the idol, symbolizing purification and a welcoming gesture. You can offer water three times, saying a simple prayer for purity.
- 5 Apply fresh sandalwood paste (chandan) on the forehead of Lord Ganesha's idol. Then, apply kumkum over the chandan. Offer a few red flowers to Him, placing them at His feet or near the idol, with devotion.
- 6 This is a central part of the Durva Ganpati Puja. Take the Durva grass (preferably 21 strands or small bunches) in your hands. Offer the Durva grass to Lord Ganesha, placing it at His feet, while meditating on His form and silently asking for His blessings for happiness and prosperity.
- 7 Wave the lit agarbatti in small circles in front of the idol, letting the fragrance fill the space. Then, wave the lit ghee lamp similarly. Finally, offer the sweets or fruits (Naivedya) to Lord Ganesha, placing them in front of Him, and silently request Him to accept this offering.
- 8 Light a camphor or a small wick in a plate for Aarti. Wave the Aarti lamp in front of Lord Ganesha, circling it clockwise, and sing a simple Aarti song or just silently express your devotion. After Aarti, offer a final respectful prostration (Pranam) by bowing down, seeking His forgiveness for any mistakes and asking for His continuous blessings.
- 9 After the puja is complete, distribute the Naivedya (sweets/fruits) that was offered to Lord Ganesha as Prasad among family members and anyone present. This act symbolizes sharing the blessings received from the deity.
