How to Perform Purnima Vrat
- 1 Begin your preparations the evening before or early on Purnima morning. Thoroughly clean your home, especially the area designated for worship (puja area). Take a purifying bath in the morning to prepare your body and mind for the sacred observance.
- 2 Gather all necessary puja items: a clean cloth for the altar, an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu or Goddess Lakshmi, fresh flowers, fruits, sweets (for Prasad), incense sticks, a lamp (diya) with ghee or oil and a cotton wick, turmeric (haldi), kumkum, unbroken rice grains (akshat), and a small bell. Arrange these items neatly on a plate or in small containers near your puja area.
- 3 Sit comfortably facing East or North-East in your puja area. Hold a small amount of water, a few rice grains, and a flower in your right palm. Silently take a pledge (Sankalp) to observe the Purnima Vrat with full devotion for the well-being and prosperity of your family, or for any specific heartfelt desire. Let the items in your hand gently flow into a plate placed in front of you.
- 4 Place the clean cloth on a raised platform or small table. Carefully place the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu or Goddess Lakshmi on it. Light the lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, and light two incense sticks, placing them in their stand. Offer a few drops of water to the deity by sprinkling it with your right hand, then apply a tiny dot of turmeric and kumkum to the deity's forehead or feet.
- 5 Offer the fresh flowers to the deity, placing them respectfully at the feet or around the picture. Then, offer the prepared fruits and sweets as Prasad. Gently ring the small bell a few times while offering prayers. Sit with folded hands, focusing on the deity, and silently express your gratitude and pray for peace and blessings.
- 6 If you have a Purnima Vrat Katha book or any devotional text related to Lord Vishnu or Goddess Lakshmi, you may read a chapter or a short story from it at this time. This helps in deepening your devotion and understanding the significance of the fast. Alternatively, you can simply sit in silent meditation for a few minutes, contemplating the divine.
- 7 Conclude your worship by performing Aarti. Light a piece of camphor or a small ghee-soaked wick on a small plate. Hold this flame in your right hand and move it clockwise in front of the deity, from feet to head, in a circular motion. While doing so, you can silently pray or sing a simple Aarti. After offering to the deity, circulate the Aarti flame among family members so they can respectfully receive the blessings.
- 8 Distribute the offered fruits and sweets (Prasad) to all family members and any guests present. Ensure everyone receives a small portion, as consuming Prasad is considered auspicious and a form of divine blessing. You should also partake in a small amount of this consecrated food.
- 9 Wait for the moon to rise in the evening. Once the moon is clearly visible in the sky, go outside or to a window from where you can see it. Hold a small vessel of water in your hands and, with folded hands, pour a stream of water towards the moon as an offering (Arghya), showing your reverence. After this, you may break your fast by consuming the Prasad and a simple, sattvic (pure vegetarian) meal, avoiding any food items you refrained from during the day.
