How to Perform Pongal Puja
- 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning your home, especially the puja area. Decorate the entrance with traditional kolam (rangoli) designs and mango leaves. Gather all necessary ingredients: new rice, milk, jaggery, ghee, nuts, cardamom, fresh fruits, flowers, betel leaves, betel nuts, incense sticks, a lamp, and a new clay pot.
- 2 Choose a clean, open area, preferably outdoors or in a well-ventilated space facing east. Draw a kolam on the ground. Place a new clay pot on a portable stove or a safe stand. Arrange a small altar nearby with a picture or idol of Surya Dev (Sun God), along with fresh flowers.
- 3 Light the lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, signifying the presence of divine energy. Light a few incense sticks and place them in an incense holder, allowing their fragrance to purify the atmosphere. Sit comfortably, facing the east, and take a moment to silently set your intention for the puja, expressing gratitude for the harvest and praying for prosperity.
- 4 Place the new clay pot on the stove. Pour fresh milk into it and bring it to a boil. As the milk boils, add the newly harvested rice and cook until it is soft. Add jaggery, ghee, nuts, and cardamom, stirring continuously. The most significant moment is when the Pongal overflows from the pot, symbolizing abundance and prosperity; allow it to overflow naturally.
- 5 Once the sweet Pongal is ready, switch off the stove. Take a portion of the freshly cooked Pongal and place it on a clean banana leaf or plate in front of Surya Dev. Arrange other offerings such as fresh fruits, flowers, betel leaves, and betel nuts around it. This is your offering of gratitude to the Sun God.
- 6 Light a small camphor piece or a lamp wick, hold it in your right hand, and gently wave it in a clockwise circular motion in front of the offerings and the deity, expressing your devotion. You can also ring a small bell if available. Afterwards, join your hands in prayer, silently offering thanks for the harvest and seeking blessings for your family's health and prosperity.
- 7 After the puja is complete, distribute the offered Pongal and other fruits as prasad (blessed food) to all family members and any guests present. This act symbolizes sharing the blessings and good fortune received from the divine.
