How to Perform Makar Sankranti Puja
- 1 Begin by cleaning your puja area and home, taking a purifying bath yourself. Arrange a clean altar or a low stool (chowki) in an east-facing direction. Place a clean red or yellow cloth on the altar. Gather all your puja items: an idol or picture of Surya Dev, a small lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, incense sticks (agarbatti), camphor, flowers (red or yellow preferred), a pot of water, rice grains, kumkum, haldi, sandalwood paste, til (sesame seeds), gud (jaggery), and any simple sweets or fruits for offering.
- 2 Light the lamp and incense sticks. Take a little water in your right palm, along with a few rice grains and a flower. Close your eyes, offer a silent prayer to Surya Dev, stating your intention for the puja – for your family's health, prosperity, and well-being. Then, gently offer the water, rice, and flower to the deity or at the base of the lamp, signifying your Sankalp (vow).
- 3 Fill a small pot or kalash with water, add a pinch of kumkum, a few rice grains, and a flower. Holding the pot with both hands, face the rising sun (if morning, otherwise face east) and slowly pour the water, offering Arghyam to Surya Dev. Chant a simple prayer like "Om Suryaya Namah" or simply express gratitude and devotion. Afterwards, offer kumkum, haldi, and sandalwood paste to the idol or picture, followed by flowers, til, gud, and any other prepared food offerings.
- 4 Light a camphor piece or a small cotton wick soaked in ghee on a puja plate. Move it clockwise in front of Surya Dev, singing a simple Aarti or silently expressing your devotion. After the Aarti, extinguish the flame, offer a final prayer, and bow down (Pranam) to seek blessings for your family and loved ones.
- 5 Makar Sankranti emphasizes charity. Donate food, clothes, or other essentials to those in need. After the puja, distribute the offered til-gud and other sweets as Prasad among family members and friends. Remember, the spirit of giving and sharing is central to this festival.
