How to Perform Somvati Amavasya
- 1 Begin by taking a purifying bath and wearing clean, fresh clothes. Cleanse your puja area and arrange an idol or picture of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. Gather all your puja items: a lamp, oil/ghee, cotton wick, incense, camphor, kumkum, chandan, uncooked rice (akshat), fresh flowers, sweets or fruits, and a small pot of clean water (kalash).
- 2 Sit comfortably facing East. Hold a small amount of water, rice, and a flower in your right hand. Close your eyes and silently declare your intention for performing this puja, perhaps for the long life of your husband, the well-being of your children, or general family prosperity. Then, let the items gently fall into a plate in front of you.
- 3 Light the lamp (diya) using oil or ghee and a cotton wick. Place it to the right of the deity. Light an incense stick and wave it gently clockwise in front of the idol, offering a silent prayer for peace and auspiciousness in your home.
- 4 Offer a few drops of water from the kalash to the deities. Then, apply kumkum and chandan to the forehead of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. Offer the uncooked rice (akshat) and fresh flowers at their feet, expressing your devotion and gratitude.
- 5 Place the sweets or fruits you have prepared as an offering (naivedya) before the deities. You can silently pray, "O Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati, please accept this humble offering and bless my family with health, happiness, and prosperity."
- 6 Light a piece of camphor or use the lamp to perform a simple aarti. Gently circle the flame clockwise in front of the deities, then wave your hands over the flame and touch your eyes and head, symbolizing receiving the divine light. Conclude with folded hands, offering a heartfelt prayer for your family's well-being.
- 7 Bow down respectfully, touching your forehead to the ground (pranam), seeking blessings. If you observe a fast, you may break it after the puja. It is also considered auspicious to donate food, clothes, or money to those in need on this day, as a form of charity (daan).
