How to Perform Bahula / Bahura Chauth Vrat

  1. 1 On the morning of Bahula Chauth, after bathing, clean your puja area thoroughly. Place an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha, a cow, and a calf on a clean platform or altar. Arrange all your puja items like flowers, incense, lamp, water, and offerings neatly around the deities.
  2. 2 Sit comfortably facing East, light a small lamp (deepak) and an incense stick (agarbatti). Hold a little water, rice, and a flower in your right hand. Silently take a vow to observe this fast for the well-being and prosperity of your children and family, then release the items onto the altar.
  3. 3 Begin by offering water, kumkum, rice, and flowers to Lord Ganesha, praying for the successful completion of the vrat without obstacles. Offer him sweets, especially modak if available. You may gently sprinkle water on the idol or picture as a symbolic bath.
  4. 4 Next, honor the cow and calf. Offer them water, kumkum, rice, and flowers. If you have access to a real cow, you may offer her some green grass; otherwise, symbolically offer a little grass or a specific sweet to the picture or idol while praying for the protection and welfare of all cattle and your family.
  5. 5 Place the prepared prasad, which typically includes milk, fruits, and sweets, before the deities. Offer a glass of water as well. Pray silently, asking for blessings for your family's health, happiness, and prosperity throughout the year.
  6. 6 Now, either read or listen to the sacred story (Vrat Katha) associated with Bahula Chauth. This katha explains the significance and benefits of observing this fast, helping you understand the spiritual importance of the ritual.
  7. 7 After the katha, perform the aarti. Light a camphor or a cotton wick soaked in ghee on an aarti plate. Move the plate in a clockwise circular motion in front of Lord Ganesha, and then in front of the cow and calf, ringing a small bell if you have one.
  8. 8 Fold your hands in reverence and offer your final prayers, expressing gratitude for the blessings received. Silently ask for forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made during the puja. Conclude by touching your forehead to the ground in respect.
  9. 9 In the evening, after the puja and seeing the moon, you may break your day-long fast. Traditionally, the fast is broken by consuming the prasad offered to the deities and other sattvic food, avoiding grains, and sharing the blessings with your family.
