Shanivar Vrat is a Hindu fast observed on Saturdays, dedicated to Lord Shani Dev, the deity representing the planet Saturn. Devotees undertake this fast to appease Shani Dev and mitigate the malefic effects associated with Saturn's planetary positions, such as Sade Sati and Dhaiya. It is believed that observing this vrat with sincerity helps alleviate obstacles, brings good fortune, prosperity, and protects one from various misfortunes and health issues. People often seek blessings for peace, stability, and success in their endeavors.

How to Perform Shani Dev / Shanivar Vrat

  1. 1 To begin, take a purifying bath and wear clean, fresh clothes. Find a quiet, clean space in your home, preferably facing west, to perform the puja. Light a sesame oil lamp (deepak) and an incense stick (agarbatti). Take a little water in your right palm, silently state your intention to observe the Shanivar Vrat for Shani Dev's blessings, and then pour the water onto the ground, symbolizing your commitment.
  2. 2 Set up an idol or a picture of Shani Dev on a clean platform, ideally covered with a black cloth. Offer fresh flowers to the deity; blue or black flowers are traditionally preferred if available. You can also apply a small tilak (mark on the forehead) to the idol or picture using black sesame paste or sandalwood paste.
  3. 3 Now, offer specific items associated with Shani Dev. Place a handful of black sesame seeds (kala til), a few black urad dal grains, and a few drops of sesame oil before the deity. You can also place a small iron object, such as a nail or a tiny piece of iron, near the idol or picture. As you offer these, silently pray for the alleviation of troubles and for overall well-being and prosperity.
  4. 4 Perform Aarti by gently waving a small sesame oil lamp clockwise in front of Shani Dev while expressing your devotion. After the Aarti, fold your hands, close your eyes, and meditate on Lord Shani Dev. Focus on your prayers, expressing gratitude and seeking his blessings for peace, stability, and success in all your endeavors.
  5. 5 Finally, offer the prepared 'prasad' (sacred food, which can be black gram, khichdi, or sweets made with jaggery) to Shani Dev. After the puja is complete, distribute some of the prasad to family members and consume a small portion yourself to break your fast. It is also considered auspicious to donate some black sesame seeds or sesame oil to a needy person on this day, if possible.
