Amavasya Puja
Complete, verified samagri list containing 13 essential items for performing Amavasya Puja.
Amavasya Puja refers to the worship and remembrance of ancestors performed on the new moon day. On this day, devotees honor their forefathers (Pitrus) through rituals like Tarpan (offering water and sesame seeds) and other forms of worship performed at home. It is believed that performing these rites brings peace to the souls of the deceased and invokes their blessings for prosperity, well-being, and removal of obstacles in the family. This observance helps resolve Pitru Dosha and ensures the continuity of familial blessings.

How to Perform Amavasya Puja
- 1 Wake up early on Amavasya day, take a purifying bath, and wear clean clothes. Gather all necessary items: a lamp (diya), oil/ghee, cotton wicks, incense sticks (agarbatti), camphor (kapoor), fresh flowers, uncooked rice, black sesame seeds (til), Ganga jal (or clean water), a copper or brass vessel for water offerings, a small plate for offerings, and any sattvic food you plan to offer (e.g., kheer, puri, fruits). Clean the puja area thoroughly.
- 2 Choose a clean space in your home, preferably facing south or east, for the puja. Place a clean cloth on the floor or a low table. Arrange a picture or idol of your family deity (Ishta Devta) and a separate small area for the ancestors. Keep the lamp, incense, and offerings ready.
- 3 Sit comfortably, facing the south or east direction. Light the lamp (diya) with oil or ghee, placing it on the right side of the deity's image. Light an incense stick and wave it gently in front of the deity and the ancestors' area, allowing the smoke to purify the atmosphere. Silently pray for the smooth conduct of the puja and the blessings of your ancestors.
- 4 Hold a small amount of water, a few rice grains, and a flower in your right hand. Close your eyes and state your intention for performing this Amavasya Puja – for the peace of your ancestors' souls, their blessings for your family's well-being, and removal of any obstacles. Then, gently release the items onto a plate in front of you.
- 5 Now, focus on the ancestors' area. Take the copper/brass vessel with water and add a pinch of black sesame seeds (til) and a few rice grains. Hold the vessel with both hands, letting the water slowly flow from your fingertips (from the thumb and index finger gap) onto a separate plate or directly into the earth (if accessible and clean). While offering water, imagine your ancestors receiving it and silently express your gratitude and respect. Repeat this offering 3, 7, or 11 times.
- 6 Place the prepared sattvic food offerings (e.g., kheer, puri, fruits) on the small plate. Offer this food to your ancestors, keeping it near the ancestors' area. Silently request them to accept the offering and bless your family. You can also light a small ghee lamp specifically for the ancestors during this time, placing it slightly away from the main deity lamp.
- 7 After the food offering, light a small piece of camphor or use the lamp for Arati. Wave it clockwise in front of your family deity and then briefly in front of the ancestors' area, remembering their presence. Conclude by joining your palms, bowing your head, and offering a heartfelt prayer for the peace of all departed souls, the well-being of your family, and asking for forgiveness for any known or unknown mistakes.
- 8 After the puja, distribute the offered food (prasad) among family members. It is also highly meritorious to offer some of this food, or other freshly prepared food, to the needy, Brahmins, cows, or crows. This act of charity is believed to further please the ancestors and bring immense blessings.
