Sharad Purnima is a Hindu full-moon festival celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin. It is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Krishna, and the moon god Chandra, marking the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of autumn. Devotees offer prayers, special dishes like Kheer (rice pudding) which is traditionally left under moonlight overnight to absorb its blessings, and perform night worship to invite prosperity, good health, and happiness into their lives. This festival is believed to be a night when the moon's rays possess healing properties and bestow ambrosial energy.

How to Perform Sharad Purnima
- 1 Clean the puja area and gather all necessary items like idols/pictures of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Krishna, and the Moon God (Chandra Dev), a mat to sit on, a puja thali with a lamp (deepak), incense sticks (agarbatti), camphor (kapoor), flowers, fruits, sweets, Gangajal or clean water, a small cloth for offerings, and ingredients for Kheer.
- 2 Take a purifying bath and wear clean clothes. Sit comfortably on a mat facing East or North. Place the idols/pictures on a clean platform or cloth, arranging them respectfully.
- 3 Light the lamp (deepak) with ghee or oil, signifying the presence of divine light. Light the incense sticks and place them in the holder, allowing their fragrance to purify the atmosphere. Silently express your intention for the puja, asking for blessings for your family.
- 4 Offer fresh flowers to the deities, placing them gently at their feet or near their pictures. Place various fruits and sweets on the puja thali as Naivedya (offering). Offer a spoonful of water from a kalash or small bowl to symbolize cleansing.
- 5 Prepare fresh Kheer (rice pudding with milk, sugar, and dry fruits). This is central to Sharad Purnima. After the main puja, keep the Kheer covered on the puja platform as an initial offering to the deities.
- 6 After offering the Kheer during the day or early evening puja, take the covered Kheer outside or to a balcony/terrace where it can receive the direct rays of the full moon throughout the night. It is believed to absorb the moon's healing and ambrosial energy. You may chant simple prayers or meditate silently.
- 7 Perform Aarti using the lit lamp and camphor, circling it clockwise in front of the deities while singing a simple prayer or devotional song. After Aarti, offer water from your right hand to symbolize completion, then bow down and seek blessings, prosperity, good health, and forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes.
- 8 The next morning, bring the Kheer indoors. Distribute it as Prasad (blessed food) among all family members and friends. It is believed to be highly beneficial for health and well-being after being energized by the moonlight, and should be consumed with reverence.
