How to Perform Sawan Somvar Vrat

  1. 1 On Sawan Somvar, wake up early in the morning before sunrise, take a purifying bath, and wear clean clothes. Clean your puja area thoroughly. Then, sit facing East or North, ideally on a mat or cushion. Hold a few drops of water in your right palm, recall your name and purpose (e.g., seeking blessings of Lord Shiva and Parvati for family well-being), and then let the water flow onto the ground, signifying your resolve to observe the fast with devotion.
  2. 2 Place an idol or picture of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on a clean platform in your puja area. Arrange all the puja items: a small lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, incense sticks (agarbatti), a plate with bilva patra (bael leaves), dhatura, akash, sandalwood paste (chandan), unbroken rice grains (akshat), flowers (especially white ones), fresh fruits, and sweets (bhog). Keep a small pot of water (kalash) and a spoon ready.
  3. 3 Light the lamp and incense sticks. Offer a simple prayer to Lord Ganesha, seeking an obstacle-free puja. Then, silently invoke Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, asking them to accept your worship and bless your home. Apply sandalwood paste and offer akshat to the deities.
  4. 4 Offer fresh water to Lord Shiva, followed by milk (if available, you can also offer Ganga Jal). Gently pour these over the Shivling or onto the deity's feet while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" silently. Then, offer bilva patra, dhatura, and akash flowers to Lord Shiva, and any other flowers to Goddess Parvati.
  5. 5 Place the fresh fruits and sweets (bhog) before the deities. Light the camphor (kapoor) and perform the Aarti, moving the lamp clockwise in front of the deities while singing a simple Aarti or silently expressing your devotion. After Aarti, offer a few drops of water around the lamp and extinguish the flame.
  6. 6 Read or listen to the Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha (the story associated with this fast). This is an important part of the ritual that helps in understanding the significance of the vrat. After the Katha, humbly ask for forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes during the puja and seek blessings for your family's well-being and fulfillment of wishes.
  7. 7 Observe the fast throughout the day, consuming only fruits, water, or permitted non-grain foods as per your tradition and capacity. In the evening, after sunset, perform a simple Aarti again, light a lamp, and offer some fruits to the deities.
  8. 8 After the evening puja, you may break your fast by consuming the offered fruits (prasad) and a light, sattvic meal (without onion and garlic). Distribute the prasad among family members. Ensure you maintain cleanliness and devotion throughout the day.
