How to Perform Sankat Mochan Hanuman Puja
- 1 Begin by cleaning the puja area thoroughly and taking a bath. Set up a clean altar or a raised platform, placing a fresh cloth on it. Position Lord Hanuman's idol or picture at the center. Gather all necessary puja items like a lamp (diya), incense sticks (agarbatti), camphor, flowers (especially red ones), fruits, sweets (boondi laddu if possible), water, kumkum, chandan, and a bell.
- 2 Sit comfortably on the floor, facing east or north, with folded legs and a straight back. Hold a little water in your right palm, along with a flower and a few rice grains. With a clear mind, state your intention for performing this puja, silently asking Lord Hanuman to help you overcome your difficulties and bless your family. Then, pour the water and other items onto a plate in front of the deity.
- 3 Light the lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, placing it on the altar. Then light one or two incense sticks and place them in the stand. Before proceeding, silently offer a quick prayer to Lord Ganesha, requesting him to remove any obstacles from your puja and ensure its successful completion. Ring the bell gently.
- 4 With folded hands, close your eyes and meditate on Lord Hanuman. Silently invite Him to be present in your puja and accept your devotion. Imagine His powerful and benevolent form, and feel His presence filling the puja space. Offer a flower or a pinch of kumkum at His feet as a gesture of welcome.
- 5 Offer a few drops of water with a spoon (achaman), then apply chandan (sandalwood paste) and kumkum (red vermilion) to the idol or picture. Place fresh flowers at His feet. Light the camphor (if using) for a brief arati or simply show the lit lamp to the deity. Finally, offer fruits and sweets (Naivedya) to Lord Hanuman, praying for His blessings.
- 6 Now, with full devotion, recite the Hanuman Chalisa. If you don't know it, you can simply chant a simple mantra like "Om Hanumate Namaha" 11, 21, or 108 times, or just meditate on Lord Hanuman's name. Focus on the words and their meaning, feeling the strength and protection of Lord Hanuman.
- 7 Light the camphor or use the puja lamp, holding it in your right hand. Stand up and gently wave the flame in a circular motion in front of Lord Hanuman, from head to toe, clockwise. Sing or play an Aarti song dedicated to Lord Hanuman. After the aarti, offer the warmth of the flame to all family members by allowing them to pass their hands over it and touch their eyes.
- 8 With folded hands, bow down respectfully before Lord Hanuman. Offer your sincere prayers and express gratitude for His presence and blessings. Silently ask for forgiveness for any mistakes or omissions made during the puja, knowing that He is benevolent and understanding.
- 9 Distribute the fruits and sweets that were offered to Lord Hanuman as Prasad (blessed food) among all family members and any guests present. This Prasad is considered sacred and carries the blessings of the deity. Share it with joy and reverence.
