Complete, verified samagri list containing 32 essential items for performing Jivitputrika / Jitiya Vrat.
Jitiya Vrat, also known as Jivitputrika Vrat, is a significant Hindu observance predominantly celebrated by mothers in North and East India. During this rigorous day-long fast, mothers abstain from food and water to pray for the well-being, longevity, and prosperity of their children. The fast is observed with immense devotion, invoking the blessings of Lord Jimutavahana, a mythical figure who saved a mother's children from the clutches of a bird of prey. This vrat is believed to protect children from harm and grant them a long and healthy life.

How to Perform Jivitputrika / Jitiya Vrat
- 1 On the first day, known as Nahay Khay, wake up early, take a holy bath, and clean the puja area. Prepare and consume only sattvic food (pure vegetarian, without onion or garlic) before sunset. Mentally resolve to observe the fast with devotion for the well-being and longevity of your children.
- 2 Before the sunrise on the second day (fasting day), observe the tradition of Sarjhi or Othgan. Consume a meal, often consisting of foods like curd, roti, fruits, or sweets, before dawn breaks. This is the last meal you will have before beginning the strict Nirjala (waterless) fast.
- 3 Choose a clean spot for your puja. Place a small wooden stool (चौकी) and spread a clean cloth over it. Place an image or idol of Lord Jimutavahana, usually depicted as a horse-rider, along with Lord Ganesha and the Sun God. You may also draw a small figure of an eagle and a fox as part of the tradition.
- 4 Light a Ghee lamp (दीपक) and incense sticks (अगरबत्ती) near the deities. Offer fresh flowers, fruits, and sweets like malpua or peda. Place water in a small vessel (कलश). Tie the Jitiya thread (a red thread or mala of specific items like Kush, Jitiya, or a cotton string) to the image of Jimutavahana or wear it yourself as a symbol of protection for your children.
- 5 Sit comfortably facing east, if possible. Read or listen to the Jivitputrika Vrat Katha (story). As you listen, hold some grains of rice or flowers in your hand. After the story, offer these grains/flowers to the deities. Silently pray to Lord Jimutavahana for the long life, health, and prosperity of your children.
- 6 Perform an Aarti (waving of a lit lamp) for Lord Jimutavahana and other deities, singing devotional hymns if you know them. Seek blessings from the deities. Continue the Nirjala fast throughout the night. The puja officially concludes after this, but the fast continues until the next day's Parana.
- 7 On the third day, after sunrise, perform the Parana to break your fast. Take a bath and offer water to the Sun God. Traditionally, specific foods like Khesari Sag, Marua Roti, and Jitiya fish (if non-vegetarian) are consumed first. You may also offer food to a Brahmin or a needy person before eating yourself.
