Nirjala Ekadashi
Complete, verified samagri list containing 17 essential items for performing Nirjala Ekadashi.
Nirjala Ekadashi is a significant Hindu fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu, observed on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight of the Jyeshtha month. It is considered one of the strictest Ekadashis, where devotees abstain from both food and water for a full 24-hour period. This rigorous fast is undertaken with immense devotion to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu for spiritual purification, penance, and the fulfillment of desires. It is believed that observing Nirjala Ekadashi can bestow the merit of all 24 annual Ekadashis.

How to Perform Nirjala Ekadashi
- 1 On the day before Ekadashi (Dashami), ensure you eat only sattvic food, avoiding grains, onions, and garlic. Mentally prepare yourself for the rigorous fast by resolving to observe it with full devotion. Clean your puja area and prepare any necessary items for the next day.
- 2 Wake up early on Ekadashi morning, take a purifying bath, and wear clean clothes. Sit facing East or North in your puja area before Lord Vishnu's idol or picture. Light a lamp (diya) with ghee and an incense stick (agarbatti), then silently take the vow (sankalpa) to observe the Nirjala Ekadashi fast without food or water for the entire day.
- 3 Offer a few flowers, a small amount of fruit (if you intend to offer something before fast begins, otherwise offer mentally), and a small glass of water (which you will not consume) to Lord Vishnu as a symbol of your devotion. You can also offer a small amount of 'Tulsi' leaves if available. Silently pray for strength and blessings to successfully complete the fast and for the well-being of your family.
- 4 Throughout the day, completely abstain from both food and water. Dedicate your time to spiritual activities such as chanting 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' or 'Hare Krishna Maha Mantra', reading the Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu Sahasranama, or listening to devotional songs. Maintain a peaceful and positive mindset, avoiding anger and negative thoughts.
- 5 In the evening, after sunset, light the lamp and incense again. Perform a simple Aarti (lamp ceremony) to Lord Vishnu, singing a devotional hymn or simply offering your prayers with folded hands. Reflect on your day of fasting and express gratitude for the strength given to you.
- 6 On the morning of Dwadashi (the day after Ekadashi), at the auspicious time (Parana time, which can be checked online or in a Hindu calendar), take a bath and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. Break your fast by consuming a small amount of water, followed by a light, sattvic meal (without grains or specific vegetables if observing Dwadashi fast, otherwise any sattvic food). It is traditional to offer food to a cow, Brahmin, or needy person before breaking your own fast if possible.
