How to Perform Varalakshmi Vrat

  1. 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning the puja area and yourself. Gather all necessary items: a picture or idol of Goddess Lakshmi, a kalasha (pot), fresh water, rice grains, betel leaves and nuts, various flowers (especially lotus if possible), fruits, sweets (like modak or payasam), turmeric, kumkum, sandalwood paste, incense sticks, a lamp, oil or ghee, cotton wicks, a clean cloth, a small mirror, bangles, and a new saree or blouse piece for the Goddess.
  2. 2 Place a clean plate or a layer of rice grains on your puja altar. On this, establish the kalasha, filled with clean water. Add a pinch of turmeric, kumkum, a coin, and a flower to the water in the kalasha. Arrange five mango leaves or betel leaves around the rim of the kalasha, with their tips pointing upwards.
  3. 3 Place a coconut (with its husk) on top of the mango or betel leaves, with its pointed end facing upwards. Draw an image of Goddess Lakshmi on the coconut using turmeric and kumkum. Drape a new saree or blouse piece around the kalasha and coconut, symbolizing the Goddess, and adorn it with jewelry, bangles, and flowers.
  4. 4 Light the lamp with oil or ghee and two cotton wicks. Sit comfortably, facing either east or north. Take a little water in your right palm along with a flower and a few rice grains. Close your eyes, meditate on Goddess Varalakshmi, and silently state your intention for performing this vrat for your family's well-being, then pour the water onto a plate.
  5. 5 Before proceeding with the main puja, offer a small prayer to Lord Ganesha to ensure the smooth completion of the ritual. Make a tiny idol of Ganesha by mixing turmeric powder with a few drops of water and place it on a betel leaf. Offer a flower and a pinch of kumkum to the turmeric Ganesha, praying for the removal of all obstacles.
  6. 6 Offer fresh flowers, turmeric, kumkum, and sandalwood paste to the beautifully decorated Kalasha, inviting Goddess Varalakshmi to reside within it. Present all the prepared fruits, sweets, and other food items to the Goddess with devotion. Additionally, offer betel leaves and nuts, and you may also include a small mirror, comb, bangles, and a coin as symbols of auspiciousness.
  7. 7 With deep devotion, read aloud or listen to the Varalakshmi Vrat Katha, the sacred story associated with this observance. This narrative explains the profound significance and the numerous blessings that come from observing this vrat. Sit peacefully and let the essence of the story fill your heart and mind.
  8. 8 After the Katha, perform the Aarti using the lit lamp, waving it clockwise in front of the Goddess with reverence. Sing or listen to the Varalakshmi Aarti song. Conclude the Aarti by gently passing your hands over the flame to gather its warmth and then touching them to your eyes and head, symbolizing receiving the divine blessings.
  9. 9 Married women can offer their Mangala Sutra at the Goddess's feet, praying for their husband's long life and the well-being of their entire family, and then wear it back. Offer a final heartfelt prayer to Goddess Varalakshmi, expressing deep gratitude for her blessings and sincerely seeking forgiveness for any unintended errors made during the puja.
  10. 10 Distribute the consecrated food, known as Prasadam, to all family members and friends who are present. This act signifies sharing the blessings of the Goddess. The vrat is usually considered concluded after this distribution, and you can then partake in the Prasadam yourself.
  11. 11 Later in the day, or the next morning, gently move the kalasha from its designated place. The water from the kalasha can be respectfully sprinkled around the house to invite blessings, or poured into a plant. The rice grains from the kalasha can be mixed with your regular rice for cooking, and the coconut can be broken and consumed as prasadam.
