Kanya Pujan is a significant Hindu ritual performed primarily during Navratri, especially on the eighth or ninth day (Ashtami or Navami). In this ceremony, young, unmarried girls, typically aged two to ten years, are worshipped as embodiments of the Goddess Durga. Devotees honor these girls by washing their feet, offering them food (like puri, chana, and halwa), and presenting gifts and dakshina, seeking the blessings of the Divine Mother for prosperity, happiness, and spiritual well-being. This ritual emphasizes the reverence for feminine divinity and purity.

How to Perform Kanya Pujan

  1. 1 Gather all necessary items: 2 to 9 young girls (ages 2-10), a puja thali with kumkum, rice grains (akshat), a small diya (lamp) and matchsticks, incense sticks, a bell, flowers, and a small pot of clean water. Also prepare the special food (puri, chana, halwa) and gifts or dakshina for each girl. Ensure a clean space for the puja.
  2. 2 Once the girls arrive, welcome them with respect and affection. Offer them a comfortable place to sit, such as on clean mats or low stools, ensuring they are seated together in a row or semi-circle. You can gently ask them to make themselves comfortable.
  3. 3 Kneel before each girl, one by one, and gently wash her feet with clean water. You can use a small bowl or plate to catch the water. This act symbolizes humility and respect for the divine energy they represent. After washing, gently wipe their feet dry with a clean cloth.
  4. 4 After washing their feet, apply a small tilak of kumkum and a few rice grains (akshat) on each girl's forehead, in the center of their eyebrows. Then, offer a flower or a few flower petals to each girl, placing them in their hands or near them. You may silently pray for their well-being and the blessings of the Goddess.
  5. 5 Light the diya and incense sticks from your puja thali. With folded hands, slowly move the lit diya in a clockwise circular motion in front of each girl, one by one, while ringing the bell gently. This is an act of veneration and devotion. After aarti, you can offer the smoke from the incense sticks to them.
  6. 6 Serve the prepared sattvic food, typically puri, chana, and halwa, to each girl. Ensure they are comfortably seated and have access to water. Allow them to eat to their heart's content. This offering of food is considered an offering directly to the Goddess.
  7. 7 After they have finished eating, offer each girl a small gift (like a scarf, hair accessories, or a small toy) and some dakshina (money) as a token of your respect and gratitude. This gesture symbolizes your devotion and seeking their blessings.
  8. 8 With folded hands, touch the feet of each girl or bow down to them, seeking their blessings for prosperity, happiness, and well-being for your family. After receiving their blessings, bid them a respectful and affectionate farewell as they leave your home.
