Chhath Puja is a significant ancient Hindu festival dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, and Chhathi Maiya (Usha, the dawn goddess), to thank them for sustaining life on Earth and to request the granting of wishes. Celebrated predominantly in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh, devotees observe a rigorous four-day ritual involving holy bathing, fasting (including abstinence from water), standing in water, and offering Arghya (offerings) to the rising and setting sun. It is believed to bestow prosperity, well-being, and longevity upon family members, particularly children.

How to Perform Chhath Puja
- 1 On the first day, known as Nahay Khay, wake up early and take a purifying bath, ideally in a river or pond, or with clean water at home. After bathing, thoroughly clean your home and surroundings. Prepare a sattvic meal like Kaddo Bhaat (bottle gourd and rice) using pure ingredients and consume it as your only meal for the day, marking the start of the puja's observances and abstinence from non-vegetarian food, onions, and garlic.
- 2 On the second day, called Kharna, observe a full day's fast, traditionally without even water (Nirjala fast), from sunrise to sunset. In the evening, after sunset, prepare a special offering of Kheer (rice pudding with jaggery) and Chapatis. Light a lamp (diya) and offer this Prasad to Surya Devta (Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya, silently praying for your family's well-being. After the offering, the fasting devotee should eat this Prasad, marking the end of the day's fast and the beginning of a strict 36-hour fast.
- 3 On the third day, known as Sandhya Arghya, prepare various offerings such as Thekua, fruits, and sweets, arranging them neatly in bamboo soops (winnowing baskets) and dauras (large baskets). In the late afternoon, proceed to a clean body of water like a river, pond, or a specially prepared clean space at home with water, carrying all your offerings. Stand in the water, facing west towards the setting sun. Offer Arghya (an offering of water and milk) from a kalash (pot) to the setting sun, pouring it slowly while holding the offerings. Light earthen lamps and place them with your offerings, praying for prosperity and family well-being.
- 4 On the fourth and final day, Usha Arghya, return to the same water body or clean space before sunrise. Continue your fast as you stand in the water, this time facing east towards the rising sun. As the sun begins to rise, offer Arghya (water and milk) from your kalash, slowly pouring it towards the sun, just as you did the previous evening. Offer your prepared fruits and sweets to the rising sun. After offering the Arghya, you may break your 36-hour fast by consuming some Prasad and a small amount of ginger-jaggery mix, which is traditionally offered.
