How to Perform Dussehra Home Puja (Vijayadashami)

  1. 1 Begin by cleaning the area where you will perform the puja. Arrange the idols or pictures of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman, and Goddess Durga on a clean altar or raised platform. Gather all your puja items like water, fresh flowers, fruits, sweets, incense sticks, a lamp (diya), kumkum, haldi, rice, and a sacred thread (mouli/kalawa) nearby.
  2. 2 Sit comfortably facing East or North in front of the altar. Light the oil or ghee lamp (diya) and incense sticks. Take a few drops of water in your right hand, sprinkle it on yourself and the puja items, mentally purifying everything before starting the ritual.
  3. 3 Start by invoking Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Offer a flower, a pinch of rice (akshat), and a drop of water to an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha, or simply visualize Him. Silently ask Him to bless your puja and remove any difficulties.
  4. 4 Now, perform the Sankalpa (resolve). Hold a little rice and a few drops of water in your right palm. State your intention for performing this Dussehra puja, such as, "We perform this puja for our family's well-being, strength, victory over negativity, and prosperity." Then, let the rice and water gently fall onto a plate.
  5. 5 Offer worship to the main deities. Place fresh flowers, kumkum, haldi, and rice (akshat) on the idols or pictures of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman, and Goddess Durga. Tie a sacred thread (mouli/kalawa) around their wrists or on the deities. Offer the fruits and sweets you have prepared, recalling their stories of triumph over evil.
  6. 6 Perform Shastra Puja by worshipping your tools, books, vehicles, or any instruments of your profession. Place them near the altar, apply a tilak (kumkum mark) on them, and offer a flower. This symbolizes seeking blessings for their proper and righteous use, acknowledging their role in your life's success.
  7. 7 Offer the prepared sweets, fruits, or any other food (Naivedya/Bhog) to the deities. Place a small portion of each item in front of the idols or pictures, silently requesting the deities to accept your offering. After a few moments, you can move them aside to prepare for Prasad distribution.
  8. 8 Perform the Aarti. Light camphor or a cotton wick dipped in ghee on an aarti plate. Gently circulate the aarti plate clockwise in front of the deities while ringing a small bell, if you have one. You can sing a simple aarti or just offer your prayers silently during this time.
  9. 9 Finally, distribute the offered prasad (sweets and fruits) among all family members and consume it respectfully. Seek blessings from the deities for strength, courage, peace, prosperity, and the removal of all negative forces from your home and lives.
