How to Perform Devutthana Ekadashi
- 1 Wake up early on Devutthana Ekadashi morning, take a purifying bath, and then clean your puja area. Set up a clean altar with an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu and a Tulsi plant. Arrange all your puja items like a lamp, incense, water, flowers, fruits, sweets, roli (red powder), and chawal (rice). Sit facing East or North, hold a little water and rice in your right hand, and silently express your intention to observe the fast and perform the puja for blessings for your family.
- 2 Place a ghee lamp and incense sticks on the altar. Light them carefully. As you light the lamp and incense, offer a silent prayer, asking for purity, peace, and positive energy to fill your home and the puja space.
- 3 Now, it's time to awaken Lord Vishnu. Gently touch or mentally invoke Lord Vishnu, saying a simple prayer like, "Hey Bhagwan, uthiye, ab aapke jagran ka samay hai" (Oh Lord, please awaken, it is time for your awakening). Offer a little water to the deity's image or idol for symbolic cleansing, and then offer a new piece of cloth or a fresh flower if specific clothing isn't available.
- 4 Apply Tilak (a mark made with roli and chawal) to Lord Vishnu's forehead. Offer fresh flowers, especially yellow ones like marigolds, as these are often favored. Most importantly, offer fresh Tulsi leaves, as Tulsi is exceptionally dear to Lord Vishnu and considered very sacred for this puja.
- 5 Offer seasonal fruits and homemade sweets, known as Naivedya, to Lord Vishnu. Ensure that the food offered is sattvic, meaning it should be pure vegetarian and prepared without onion or garlic. Place a clean glass of water next to the offerings on the altar.
- 6 Perform Aarti using the lit lamp, waving it clockwise in front of Lord Vishnu and the Tulsi plant. You can sing a simple Aarti song or just silently offer your heartfelt devotion. After Aarti, bow down with folded hands, offer some flowers at the deity's feet, and sincerely ask for blessings for your family's well-being, happiness, and prosperity.
- 7 If space permits, perform a small clockwise circumambulation (Parikrama) around your altar. If not, simply turn in a circle in place as a symbolic gesture. Afterwards, with folded hands, silently apologize for any unintentional mistakes made during the puja and express your deep gratitude to Lord Vishnu for His blessings.
- 8 On the next day, Dwadashi, wake up early and take a purifying bath. It is crucial to break your fast (Parana) before the end of Dwadashi Tithi. Break your fast by consuming sattvic food, ideally with a Tulsi leaf or a few drops of Ganga Jal, to complete the observance of Devutthana Ekadashi.
