How to Perform Kartik Purnima Puja

  1. 1 On Kartik Purnima morning, wake up early, clean your home, especially the puja area. Take a purifying bath, wear clean clothes, and then prepare your puja space. Arrange all your puja items like idols/pictures of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, a lamp, incense, flowers, fruits, sweets (prasad), a clean cloth, water, and kumkum/haldi.
  2. 2 Place a small wooden stool or platform (chowki) and spread a clean, fresh cloth over it. Gently place the idols or framed pictures of Lord Vishnu (or Satyanarayan) and Goddess Lakshmi on this prepared platform. Ensure they are facing East if possible, or a direction that feels appropriate for your home.
  3. 3 Place a pure ghee or oil lamp (deepak) in front of the deities. Light the lamp using a matchstick, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and inviting divine light. While lighting, silently pray for wisdom, prosperity, and the well-being of your family.
  4. 4 Fill a small vessel or kalash with clean water. Take a spoonful of water (using an achmani or any clean spoon) and offer it symbolically towards the deities, letting it fall into a small plate kept below. You can repeat this three times, signifying purification and dedication.
  5. 5 Take a small amount of kumkum (red powder) or sandalwood paste (chandan) on your ring finger. First, apply a tilak to the forehead of Lord Vishnu and then to Goddess Lakshmi. Afterward, apply a tilak to your own forehead and other family members present, symbolizing respect and blessings.
  6. 6 Take some fresh flowers, such as lotus, marigolds, or roses. Offer these flowers to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi by placing them gently at their feet or around their idols/pictures. While offering, express your devotion and gratitude.
  7. 7 Light an incense stick (agarbatti) and wave it in a clockwise circular motion three times in front of the deities, letting the fragrant smoke purify the atmosphere. This also symbolizes our desires rising to the heavens. If doing Deep Daan near a water body, you can float small lamps there separately later.
  8. 8 Place a plate of fruits, sweets, or any homemade pure vegetarian food (naivedya) in front of the deities. Offer it with devotion, believing that the deities accept your offering. You can sprinkle a few drops of water over the prasad before offering.
  9. 9 Light a small camphor piece or cotton wicks soaked in ghee in an aarti lamp. With folded hands, sing a simple aarti song (like Om Jai Jagadish Hare or a Lakshmi Aarti) while gently waving the lit lamp in a clockwise motion in front of the deities. After the aarti, pass your hands over the flame and touch your eyes and head, symbolizing receiving blessings.
  10. 10 With folded hands, close your eyes and offer a silent prayer, expressing your wishes and gratitude. Ask for forgiveness for any mistakes made during the puja and for the well-being and prosperity of your family and all beings. You may gently bow before the deities.
  11. 11 After the puja concludes, distribute the offered prasad (fruits, sweets) among all family members and anyone present. Share it with friends and neighbors as well, as sharing prasad is considered a way to spread blessings and positive energy.
