Mangalvar Vrat (Tuesday Fast) is a Hindu observance primarily dedicated to Lord Hanuman, or sometimes to Goddess Durga or the planet Mars (Mangal Dev). Devotees undertake this fast to seek strength, courage, protection from obstacles, and to mitigate the malefic effects of Mars in their horoscopes. It is believed that observing this vrat with sincerity can bring prosperity, good health, and fulfill desires. The fast is typically broken after sunset, often with an offering of sweets.

How to Perform Mangalvar Vrat

  1. 1 Begin your day with a purifying bath. Wear clean clothes. Designate a clean, quiet space in your home for the puja. Gather all necessary items: an idol or picture of Lord Hanuman (or Durga/Mangal Dev), a red cloth to spread, fresh flowers (red if possible), fruits, sweets (especially jaggery/gud or laddoo for Hanuman), a lamp (diya) with oil or ghee, cotton wicks, incense sticks (agarbatti), camphor, kumkum (red vermillion), chawal (rice grains), and a small pot of water.
  2. 2 Sit comfortably facing east or north on your designated puja spot. Hold a few grains of rice, a flower petal, and a little water in your right palm. Close your eyes and silently declare your intention for observing the Mangalvar Vrat – stating your specific desire or the purpose of the fast (e.g., "I observe this fast for the well-being of my family and to seek Lord Hanuman's blessings"). Place the items from your palm onto the red cloth in front of the deity.
  3. 3 Place the idol or picture of Lord Hanuman (or Durga/Mangal Dev) on the red cloth. Light the lamp (diya) and place it on the right side of the deity. Light the incense sticks and place them on the left. Silently pray for the presence of the divine and a successful puja.
  4. 4 Offer kumkum and rice grains to the deity. Place the fresh flowers, fruits, and sweets (especially laddoo or jaggery items) in front of the deity as an offering (bhog). Offer a small glass of water. If observing for Hanuman, you may also offer a red cloth or vermillion (sindoor).
  5. 5 With folded hands, recite the Hanuman Chalisa if you are worshipping Lord Hanuman. Alternatively, you can read the Mangalvar Vrat Katha (story) or simply meditate on the deity and chant their name (e.g., "Om Hanumate Namah" or "Om Mangalaya Namah"). Focus on your devotion and express your prayers.
  6. 6 Light a piece of camphor or a small wick soaked in ghee on an aarti plate. With both hands, gently wave the aarti lamp clockwise in front of the deity, ringing a bell if available. Sing an aarti song or simply concentrate on the divine light. After performing aarti, extinguish the flame, and offer the warm light to all family members by passing your hands over the flame and then touching your eyes.
  7. 7 Distribute the offered sweets (prasad) to all family members and anyone else present. The fast is typically observed throughout the day, without consuming solid food or sometimes even water, depending on personal tradition. After sunset, you may break your fast by consuming the offered prasad and a simple, sattvic (pure) meal, preferably without salt.
