How to Perform Hariyali Teej Puja
- 1 Wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Observe the Nirjala (waterless) fast throughout the day. Clean the puja area thoroughly and gather all necessary items like idols or pictures of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha, along with kumkum, turmeric, rice, flowers, sweets, fruits, incense, a lamp, and 'solah shringar' items for Maa Parvati.
- 2 Place a clean cloth on a raised platform (chowki). Set up the idols or pictures of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha on it. If possible, place a Kalash (pot) filled with water, mango leaves, and a coconut on top, symbolizing auspiciousness, to the right of the deities.
- 3 Sit facing east or north, with folded hands. Take a little water, rice, and a flower in your right hand. State your intention aloud, saying you are observing this Hariyali Teej fast for the long life and well-being of your husband and for a happy married life, or for a good husband if unmarried.
- 4 Light the diya (lamp) with ghee or oil and place it in front of the deities. Then, offer a small amount of water, kumkum, turmeric, rice, and a flower to Lord Ganesha, praying for the successful completion of the puja without obstacles.
- 5 Begin the main puja by offering water to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, followed by applying kumkum and turmeric. Offer fresh flowers, belpatra (for Shiva), and durva grass (if available) with devotion.
- 6 Present the 'solah shringar' items to Goddess Parvati, which typically include bangles, sindoor, bindi, mehendi, and a sari. Offer them with devotion, symbolizing her married status and seeking blessings for your own marital happiness.
- 7 Light the incense sticks (dhoop) and show them to the deities. Offer fruits, sweets, and any other prepared 'naivedyam' items. Offer a spoonful of water to cleanse the offerings, then place it near the deities.
- 8 After the offerings, gather the family members and respectfully read or listen to the Hariyali Teej Vrat Katha (story). This narrative explains the significance of the fast and the profound devotion of Goddess Parvati.
- 9 Conclude the puja by performing Aarti using the lit lamp, singing a devotional song while circling the lamp before the deities. After Aarti, offer your prostrations (pranam) and seek blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for a blissful married life.
- 10 After the puja, take some of the 'solah shringar' items or other auspicious marital items, along with some fruits and sweets. Respectfully offer them to a Brahmin woman, your mother-in-law, or an elder married woman, seeking their blessings.
- 11 Break your Nirjala fast after completing all puja rituals, usually in the evening after moonrise (though regional customs vary, some break it after the puja in the day). Consume sattvic (pure) food, ideally beginning with water or milk and fruits.
