How to Perform Griha Lakshmi Puja
- 1 Before starting the puja, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Arrange all necessary items like the idol or picture of Goddess Lakshmi, a clean cloth for the altar, a lamp (diya), incense sticks, fresh flowers, fruits, sweets, kumkum, haldi, unbroken rice (akshat), a small bell, and a kalash (water pot) with water and mango leaves.
- 2 Choose a clean and quiet spot, preferably facing East or North. Spread a clean cloth and place the idol or picture of Goddess Lakshmi on it. Now, light the oil or ghee lamp (diya) and incense sticks, placing them respectfully before the deity. Silently pray for the removal of obstacles and for peace to prevail during the puja.
- 3 Begin by invoking Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. With folded hands, offer a flower or a pinch of akshat (unbroken rice) to the idol or picture of Goddess Lakshmi, mentally dedicating it to Ganesha first. Silently pray to Lord Ganesha to bless the puja and ensure its smooth completion without any hindrances.
- 4 Place the kalash (water pot) filled with water, a few mango leaves, and a coconut on top near the Goddess. The kalash symbolizes auspiciousness and the universe. Offer a flower and a pinch of akshat to the kalash, signifying your invitation for divine energies to be present during the puja.
- 5 With folded hands and a sincere heart, invite Goddess Lakshmi to your home. You can simply say, "Om Shri Mahalakshmi Namah, I invite you into my home to bless my family with prosperity, peace, and well-being." Offer a flower to the deity, believing that the Goddess has now graced your home with her presence.
- 6 Now, offer various items to Goddess Lakshmi. Start by applying a small amount of kumkum and haldi (turmeric) to the idol or picture. Then, offer fresh flowers, followed by unbroken rice grains (akshat). Finally, offer the fruits and sweets (Naivedya) that you have prepared, placing them before the deity.
- 7 Light an incense stick (dhoop) and show it in a circular motion clockwise before the deity, spreading its fragrance. Then, take the lit lamp (deep) and also show it in a circular motion clockwise before Goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing light and divine presence.
- 8 Now, perform a simple Aarti using the lit lamp, waving it gently in circular motions before the Goddess while ringing a small bell. Sing a simple prayer or silently express your gratitude and desires for your family's prosperity, health, and happiness.
- 9 After the Aarti, bow down with folded hands, touching the ground with your forehead if comfortable, as a sign of deep reverence. Then, with humility, offer a "Kshama Prarthana" (prayer for forgiveness) for any known or unknown mistakes made during the puja, asking for the Goddess's continued blessings.
- 10 Conclude the puja by distributing the offered fruits and sweets (prasad) among all family members and anyone present. Consuming prasad is considered a blessing from the deity and helps to spread positive energy throughout the household.
