How to Perform Kanya Sankranti
- 1 Begin by waking up early, before or around sunrise. Take a purifying bath, wearing clean, fresh clothes. Choose a clean and peaceful spot in your home, preferably facing East, to set up your puja area.
- 2 Gather your puja items: a small pot or jug (lota) of clean water, a small plate for offerings, rice grains (akshat), kumkum (red powder), turmeric (haldi), flowers (red if possible), a lamp (diya) with ghee or oil, incense sticks (agarbatti), and a small fruit or sweet for Prasad. Place these neatly on your puja plate.
- 3 Sit comfortably on the floor on a mat, facing East. Light the ghee or oil lamp (diya) and the incense sticks. Offer a silent prayer to Surya Dev, asking for good health, prosperity, and blessings for your family.
- 4 Hold the lota of water with both hands. Stand up, facing the rising sun (or East if the sun isn't visible indoors), and slowly pour the water in a continuous stream, letting it fall into a plant pot or a clean area of the ground. While pouring, meditate on the sun's energy and silently express your gratitude and devotion.
- 5 After offering Arghya, return to your sitting position. Offer a few rice grains, a pinch of kumkum, turmeric, and some flowers onto the puja plate, symbolizing your devotion to Surya Dev. You can place these offerings in front of a small image or idol of Surya Dev if you have one, or simply in the clean puja area.
- 6 With folded hands, offer a simple prayer to Surya Dev. You can say something like, "O Surya Dev, bless us with health, wisdom, and peace. May your light remove all darkness from our lives." Focus on positive energy and express your heartfelt wishes.
- 7 Distribute the fruit or sweet Prasad among your family members. Kanya Sankranti is also highly auspicious for charity. If possible, donate food, clothes, or money to the needy, or feed animals. This act of giving is believed to bring immense spiritual merit.
- 8 Conclude your puja by offering a final prayer of thanks to Surya Dev for accepting your offerings and blessings. Gently extinguish the lamp if it's still lit, or let it burn out naturally. Maintain a positive and peaceful mindset throughout the day.
