How to Perform Surya Dev / Ravivar Vrat

  1. 1 On Saturday evening, clean your home, especially the puja area. Gather all necessary items: a small pitcher or kalash for water, a copper vessel (lota) for offering water, red flowers, red sandalwood (chandan), unbroken rice (akshat), a ghee lamp (deepak), incense sticks (agarbatti), a small red cloth, and fruits/sweets for prasad. Wake up before sunrise on Sunday.
  2. 2 After waking up, take a purifying bath. Wear clean, preferably red or white, clothes. Avoid black clothes on this day. Ensure your mind is calm and focused on devotion.
  3. 3 In your puja area, place a small idol or picture of Surya Dev. Spread a clean red cloth beneath it. Light the ghee lamp and incense sticks, placing them on either side of the deity. Arrange your offerings of flowers, sandalwood, akshat, and prasad near the deity.
  4. 4 Sit comfortably in front of the deity, facing east if possible. Hold a little water, akshat, and a flower in your right hand. Close your eyes and silently state your intention to observe the Ravivar Vrat for good health, prosperity, and blessings from Surya Dev. Then, release the items into a plate or kalash.
  5. 5 Go outside to an open area or a window where you can see the rising sun. Fill the copper vessel (lota) with clean water. Add a pinch of red sandalwood, a few red flowers, and a few grains of rice to the water. Hold the vessel with both hands at chest level, facing the sun. Slowly pour the water in a continuous stream, letting it fall to the ground (or into a pot), while silently meditating on Surya Dev.
  6. 6 Return to your puja area. Offer the red flowers, red sandalwood (applying a tilak to the deity's forehead if possible), and akshat to Surya Dev. Light a fresh incense stick and wave it gently. Offer the prepared fruits and sweets as prasad. Silently pray for wellbeing and express gratitude.
  7. 7 Sit comfortably and read or listen to the "Ravivar Vrat Katha." This sacred story narrates the significance and benefits of observing the Sunday fast. Listening to it with devotion is an integral part of the ritual and helps deepen your spiritual connection.
  8. 8 Light the camphor or a small ghee lamp and perform Aarti for Surya Dev. Move the lamp clockwise in front of the deity, ringing a small bell if you have one. After the Aarti, gently wave your hands over the flame and touch them to your eyes and head, symbolizing receiving the divine blessings.
  9. 9 Distribute the offered prasad to all family members and any visitors. Throughout the day, observe the fast, consuming only water, milk, or specific sattvic foods like fruits or kheer made without salt, as per your capacity. Break the fast after sunset by consuming a simple, sattvic meal, again avoiding salt.
