How to Perform Mahanavami

  1. 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning your puja area and purifying yourself with a bath. Wear fresh, clean clothes. Arrange all your puja items—the idol or picture of Goddess Siddhidatri, flowers, sweets, incense, lamp, and Havan materials—neatly on a clean cloth or mat before you.
  2. 2 Light the ghee lamp (diya) and place it on your right side. Then light the incense sticks (agarbatti) and place them on the left. Offer a silent prayer for purity and positive energy to fill your home as you begin the sacred ritual.
  3. 3 Before worshipping the Goddess, offer a simple prayer to Lord Ganesha. Place a small flower, a pinch of turmeric (haldi) and vermilion (kumkum) on his idol or picture, asking him to remove any obstacles from your puja and bless your efforts.
  4. 4 Now, turn your attention to Goddess Siddhidatri. Offer flowers, especially red ones, at her feet or picture. Light another incense stick and offer it to her. Place a small amount of kumkum on her forehead and offer the sweets or fruits you have prepared as Prasad, silently expressing your devotion and gratitude.
  5. 5 For the Havan, place your Havan Kund or fire-safe container in the center. Arrange some wooden sticks (samidha) inside, add a few drops of ghee, and carefully light the fire. Ensure proper ventilation and safety. Once the fire is stable, you are ready to begin the offerings.
  6. 6 With folded hands, offer a spoon of ghee into the fire, followed by a handful of Havan samagri, each time silently praying for peace, prosperity, and well-being. Repeat this offering a few times (e.g., 7 or 11 times) with full devotion. Let the sacred smoke purify the atmosphere.
  7. 7 Conclude the Havan with a final offering, known as Purnahuti. Offer all remaining Havan samagri and a larger spoon of ghee into the fire, along with any remaining whole fruits or betel leaves if you have them. Silently express your gratitude to the divine fire and the deities for accepting your prayers.
  8. 8 After the Havan, prepare for Kanya Puja. Invite 2 to 9 young girls (ages 2-9 are ideal) to sit comfortably in a clean area. Gently wash their feet to symbolize purification, and offer them a seat, treating them as manifestations of the Goddess herself.
  9. 9 Apply a small tilak (forehead mark) of kumkum or chandan on each girl's forehead. Offer them the prepared Prasad (like halwa, puri, chana) and ensure they eat it with joy. Finally, offer them a small gift or 'dakshina' (money) as a token of your respect and gratitude, seeking their blessings.
  10. 10 Conclude your Mahanavami puja with Aarti. Light a piece of camphor or use your ghee lamp on a plate, circle it clockwise in front of Goddess Siddhidatri's idol or picture, and then wave it before the Kanyas. Sing a simple Aarti song or chant 'Om Jai Jagadish Hare' as you do so, involving all family members.
  11. 11 After Aarti, distribute the Prasad among all family members and anyone present. Take a moment to reflect on the nine days of devotion. Offer a final silent prayer of thanks to Goddess Durga for her blessings and protection, seeking her guidance for the path ahead.
