How to Perform Durga Chalisa Path
- 1 Choose a clean and quiet corner in your home. Bathe and wear clean clothes. Arrange an idol or picture of Goddess Durga on a clean cloth or small altar, facing east or north if possible.
- 2 Collect all necessary items: a lamp (diya) with oil or ghee, incense sticks (agarbatti), a small bell, fresh flowers, fruits or sweets for offering (naivedya), a small pot of clean water, kumkum (red powder), and rice grains (chawal). Place them neatly near the idol.
- 3 Sit comfortably facing the idol. Take a spoonful of water in your right palm, sip it thrice, and then sprinkle a few drops around you for purification. Silently make your intention for the path, stating why you are performing it, and ask for Maa Durga's blessings for well-being and strength.
- 4 Light the lamp (diya) and place it near the idol. Light one or more incense sticks and place them in a stand. Offer their light and fragrance to Maa Durga, symbolizing your devotion and purity of intent.
- 5 Offer fresh flowers to the Goddess, placing them gently at her feet or on the altar. Then, apply a small tilak of kumkum and a few grains of rice on the forehead of the idol or picture, showing your respect and reverence.
- 6 With folded hands (namaskar mudra), begin reciting the Durga Chalisa clearly and with devotion. You can use a printed copy or follow along from a screen. Focus on the meaning of the verses and feel Maa Durga's protective and empowering presence.
- 7 After completing the Durga Chalisa, light a small piece of camphor or a lamp again and perform a simple Aarti by circling it clockwise in front of the idol while ringing the bell if you have one. Offer your final prayers, express gratitude for her blessings, and bow down respectfully.
- 8 Offer the fruits or sweets (naivedya) that you had kept, by placing them briefly in front of the idol. After a minute or two, distribute this blessed offering as prasad among your family members and anyone present, symbolizing the sharing of divine grace and blessings.
