Govardhan Puja (Home)
Complete, verified samagri list containing 33 essential items for performing Govardhan Puja (Home).
Govardhan Puja is an important Hindu festival celebrated primarily the day after Diwali, particularly in North India. This sacred observance commemorates the divine act of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect the local villagers and their cattle from the torrential rains caused by Lord Indra's anger. Devotees construct miniature Govardhan Hills from cow dung, adorn them with flowers, and offer a variety of food items (Annakoot) as a symbol of gratitude and devotion. The puja is performed to seek Lord Krishna's blessings for protection, prosperity, and the well-being of family and livestock. It emphasizes the importance of nature and righteous living.

How to Perform Govardhan Puja (Home)
- 1 Begin by cleaning the area where you plan to perform the puja. Lay down a clean cloth or mat. Gather all necessary items: fresh cow dung, various flowers, oil lamps (diyas) or candles, incense sticks, a small pitcher of clean water, roli (red kumkum powder), rice grains (akshat), and all the food items you intend to offer for Annakoot.
- 2 Now, use the fresh cow dung to sculpt a miniature Govardhan Hill. Form a mound representing the hill. You can also create small figures of Lord Krishna, cattle, and other villagers around the hill using cow dung, placing them thoughtfully on or near the main mound.
- 3 Adorn the constructed Govardhan Hill and the surrounding figures with fresh flowers, leaves, and other decorative items. You can also place small flags or colorful decorations to enhance its appearance, making it look vibrant and sacred.
- 4 Place the oil lamps (diyas) or candles around the Govardhan Hill. Light them, along with the incense sticks. As you light them, silently offer your prayers and intentions to Lord Krishna for the well-being and prosperity of your family and livestock.
- 5 Take a few drops of clean water from the pitcher in your right hand and sprinkle it gently over the Govardhan Hill and all the puja items. This act symbolizes purification and inviting divine presence.
- 6 Dip your finger in the roli (red kumkum powder) and apply a tilak (sacred mark) to the figures of Lord Krishna and the Govardhan Hill. You may also apply tilak to other family members present, symbolizing blessings and devotion.
- 7 Now, offer fresh flowers by gently placing them at the base of the Govardhan Hill and on the figures of Lord Krishna and the cattle. You can also offer a few rice grains (akshat) along with the flowers.
- 8 Arrange all the prepared food items, collectively known as "Annakoot," around the Govardhan Hill. This offering typically includes a variety of sweets, savories, grains, and vegetables, symbolizing gratitude and abundance. Silently pray for Lord Krishna's blessings upon the food and your family.
- 9 Light a small lamp (diya) on a plate for aarti. Hold the plate in your right hand and move it in a clockwise circular motion in front of the Govardhan Hill and Lord Krishna's figures, while singing or reciting an aarti prayer. This concludes the main worship.
- 10 After the aarti, stand up and perform a gentle circumambulation (parikrama) around the Govardhan Hill, ideally seven times, if space permits. This act symbolizes showing respect and devotion by encircling the sacred representation.
- 11 Finally, distribute the Annakoot and other offered food items as prasad (sacred offering) to all family members and friends. Share it with joy and reverence, as it is considered blessed food.
