Step-by-Step Vidhi • विधि

How to Perform Sharad Navratri

  1. 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning the designated puja area in your home. Gather all essential items: a small idol or picture of Goddess Durga, a kalash (urn), clean soil, barley or wheat seeds, five mango leaves, a fresh coconut, red cloth, sacred thread (mauli), flowers, fruits, sweets, a ghee lamp, incense sticks, and kumkum (vermilion). Position the Durga idol/picture facing East or North.
  2. 2 On the first day, perform Ghatasthapana. In a wide-mouthed pot or tray, spread a layer of soil. Sprinkle the barley or wheat seeds evenly over the soil, then cover them with a thin layer of soil. Place the kalash on this prepared base. Fill the kalash with water, add a betel nut, a coin, and a few rice grains. Arrange five mango leaves around the mouth of the kalash.
  3. 3 Wrap the coconut in a red cloth, tie it securely with the sacred thread (mauli), and place it on top of the mango leaves on the kalash, ensuring the coconut's pointed end faces upwards. Light the ghee lamp (Akhand Jyoti, if you choose to keep it lit for all nine days) and incense sticks. Silently offer your prayers for the well-being, prosperity, and spiritual strength of your family, and ring the puja bell to invite the divine presence.
  4. 4 Sit comfortably facing the idol. Take a small amount of water in your right palm, make a solemn vow (sankalp) for observing Navratri fasts and prayers sincerely, then release the water onto the plate in front of you. For all nine days, offer fresh flowers, fruits, and sweets to Goddess Durga. You can recite simple prayers you know, chant 'Om Aim Hrim Klim Chamundaye Vichche' a few times, or simply meditate on her forms with devotion.
  5. 5 On the eighth (Ashtami) or ninth (Navami) day, perform Kanya Puja. Invite 2-9 young girls (who are considered manifestations of the Goddess) to your home. Respectfully wash their feet, offer them a simple and traditional meal of puri, chana (chickpeas), and halwa (sweet semolina pudding), and give them small gifts or a coin (dakshina). Seek their blessings by touching their feet as a gesture of reverence.
  6. 6 On the tenth day, Vijayadashami, conclude the festival. Gently collect the sprouted barley or wheat from the pot; you may offer some to family members as prasad (blessed food). Respectfully immerse the remaining sprouts along with the kalash water, mango leaves, and other biodegradable puja items into a clean body of water (like a river or lake), or dispose of them reverently under a tree, signifying the completion of the ritual and gratitude to the Goddess.
