How to Perform 16 Friday Santoshi Maa Vrat
- 1 Clean the puja area and gather all necessary items like an idol or picture of Santoshi Maa, a red cloth, a Kalash (pot), coconut, mango leaves, flowers, incense sticks (agarbatti), a ghee lamp (diya), jaggery (gur), roasted chickpeas (chana), turmeric (haldi), kumkum, sindoor, fruits, and a small mat to sit on. Ensure all items are pure and ready for the ritual.
- 2 On Friday morning, after bathing, sit facing east or north on a clean mat. Hold a little water, rice, and a flower in your right hand. Close your eyes and silently declare your intention to observe the Santoshi Maa Vrat for 16 Fridays, seeking blessings for your specific wishes or family's well-being. Then, place the items down in front of the deity.
- 3 Cover a small wooden stool or table (चौकी) with a red cloth. Place the idol or picture of Santoshi Maa on it. Place the Kalash, filled with water and a few mango leaves, at the base of a coconut. Decorate the deity with a garland of flowers and apply tilak of kumkum.
- 4 Light the ghee lamp (दीपक) and incense sticks (अगरबत्ती) in front of the deity. Offer fresh flowers to Santoshi Maa, expressing your devotion. Additionally, light a small lamp dedicated to Lord Ganesha, placed slightly to the right, seeking his blessings for the successful completion of the vrat without obstacles.
- 5 Place the special `prasad` of jaggery (गुड़) and roasted chickpeas (चना) in a clean plate before the Goddess. This `prasad` is unique and essential for Santoshi Maa Vrat. You may also offer other fruits and clean water if you have prepared them.
- 6 Sit comfortably with devotion and recite or listen to the Santoshi Maa Vrat Katha. It is crucial to remember that no sour or tangy food items are to be consumed or even touched during the entire duration of the vrat, as this is a strict rule associated with Goddess Santoshi.
- 7 After the Katha concludes, perform the Aarti using the lit lamp, camphor, or a small diya. Circulate it clockwise in front of the deity while singing or chanting the Santoshi Maa Aarti. Conclude the Aarti by offering humble prayers and seeking forgiveness for any unintended mistakes during the ritual.
- 8 Bow down before Santoshi Maa, offering your heartfelt prayers, gratitude, and devotion. Distribute the `gur-chana prasad` to your family members and any other devotees present, sharing the blessings of the Goddess.
- 9 Observe the fast strictly from sunrise to sunset. After sunset, you may break your fast with a simple, sattvic meal. It is paramount that this meal *does not include any sour or tangy food items*. If possible, offer a small portion of `gur-chana` to a cow or a bird before you eat.
- 10 After successfully completing all 16 Fridays of the vrat, a special concluding ritual called Udyapan is performed on the 16th Friday. Along with the regular puja, you should feed eight small girls (कन्याएँ) or Brahmins with `gur-chana prasad` and other simple, non-sour food. Offer them a small gift or 'dakshina' (token offering) and respectfully bid them farewell, signifying the successful completion of your vrat.
