How to Perform Vat Savitri Vrat
- 1 Wake up early in the morning, bathe, and wear clean or new clothes. Clean the area where you plan to perform the puja. Gather all necessary items: a small banyan tree branch or picture, images of Savitri-Satyavan and Yama (if available), a lamp (diya), incense sticks, a pot of water (kalash), fresh flowers, fruits, sweets, raw cotton thread, vermillion (sindoor), turmeric (haldi), and uncooked rice (akshat).
- 2 Sit comfortably facing east or north. Take a little water, a few grains of rice, and a flower in your right hand. Close your eyes and silently declare your intention to perform this Vrat and puja for the long life, good health, and prosperity of your husband. After declaring your intention, gently let the items fall from your hand into a plate placed in front of you.
- 3 Place the banyan branch or picture at the center of your puja area. Arrange the images or idols of Goddess Savitri, Satyavan, and Lord Yama around it, if you have them. Light the lamp (diya) and the incense sticks (agarbatti), offering their light and fragrance to the divine.
- 4 Begin by offering water to the banyan branch or picture. Then, apply a tilak (mark) of haldi and sindoor on it. Offer fresh flowers, fruits, and sweets. While doing so, silently pray to the Banyan tree, which is considered sacred and a symbol of the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), for blessings and strength.
- 5 Now, turn your attention to the images or idols of Goddess Savitri, Satyavan, and Lord Yama. Offer water, flowers, haldi, sindoor, and akshat (rice) to each of them. Place some fruits and sweets before them, praying for steadfast devotion like Savitri's, the protection of your husband, and liberation from any obstacles.
- 6 Take the raw cotton thread in your hands. Start wrapping it around the banyan branch or picture while slowly circumambulating (walking around) it. Perform this parikrama 7, 11, or 108 times, as per your tradition, silently praying for your husband's long life and well-being with each round. After completing the rounds, tie the thread loosely around the branch/picture if possible.
- 7 After completing the circumambulations, sit down comfortably. Read aloud or listen to the sacred story (Katha) of Savitri and Satyavan, which inspires the vrat. Once the story concludes, perform an aarti by circling the lit lamp clockwise in front of the deities and the banyan tree, offering your heartfelt devotion.
- 8 Finally, bow down with respect to all the deities and the banyan tree, seeking their blessings and humbly asking for forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made during the puja. Distribute the offered fruits and sweets as prasad (sacred offering) to family members. Your vrat (fast) will typically be broken later in the day, often after sighting the moon or as per your family's specific tradition.
