How to Perform Vishnu Sahastranama Path
- 1 Begin by cleaning your puja area and yourself thoroughly. Take a bath and wear clean clothes. Arrange an altar with an image or idol of Lord Vishnu. Place a clean cloth on the altar and keep all puja items ready: a lamp (diya), incense sticks (agarbatti), camphor, flowers, kumkum, chandan, rice grains, water in a small pot (kalash), a small bell, and fruits/sweets for prasad.
- 2 Sit comfortably facing east or north. Take a spoonful of water in your right palm and sip it three times, chanting "Om Keshavaya Namah," "Om Narayanaya Namah," "Om Madhavaya Namah." Then, declare your intention for performing the Path, silently asking Lord Vishnu for specific blessings for your family or for inner peace.
- 3 Light the lamp (diya) and incense sticks. Offer a flower and a pinch of kumkum to the lamp, symbolizing the divine presence. Before starting the main recitation, briefly pray to Lord Ganesha, asking him to remove all obstacles from your path and ensure the smooth completion of the ritual.
- 4 Close your eyes or gaze at the image of Lord Vishnu. Take a few deep breaths and focus your mind on the divine form of Lord Vishnu, meditating on his attributes like peace, strength, and compassion. Silently express your devotion and readiness to receive his blessings.
- 5 Begin reciting the Vishnu Sahastranama. You can read it from a book or play an audio recording and chant along. Try to pronounce each name clearly and with devotion. If reading, use your right hand to hold the book. Focus on the meaning and feel of the names as you recite them, dedicating this act to Lord Vishnu.
- 6 After completing the recitation, offer flowers, kumkum, and chandan to Lord Vishnu. Light the camphor and perform Aarti, circling the flame in front of the deity while ringing a small bell. Sing a simple Aarti song if you know one, or simply offer your heartfelt prayers to Lord Vishnu.
- 7 Bow down with folded hands, offering your respects and gratitude to Lord Vishnu. Distribute the offered fruits or sweets (prasad) among family members. Conclude by silently asking for forgiveness for any known or unknown mistakes made during the puja, affirming your intention to perform the ritual again.
