How to Perform Goddess Lakshmi / Shukravar Vrat

  1. 1 On Friday morning, wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Clean your puja area and mentally prepare for the vrat. Sit facing East or North, hold some water in your right palm, and silently resolve to observe the fast with devotion for Goddess Lakshmi's blessings for your family's well-being.
  2. 2 Place an idol or picture of Goddess Lakshmi on a clean cloth on your puja altar. Arrange offerings like a small pot of water (kalash), a few coins, some rice grains, kumkum, haldi (turmeric), flowers (especially red or pink lotuses), incense sticks, a ghee lamp, and fruits or sweets as prasad.
  3. 3 Light the ghee lamp and incense sticks. First, offer a flower and a little kumkum to Lord Ganesha, placed to the right of Goddess Lakshmi if possible, and pray for the successful completion of the vrat without obstacles. This is a traditional way to start any auspicious ritual.
  4. 4 Now, focus on Goddess Lakshmi. Offer fresh flowers, kumkum, and haldi to her idol or picture. Lightly sprinkle some water from the kalash. Offer the fruits and sweets you prepared as prasad, silently requesting her blessings for prosperity and happiness in your home.
  5. 5 Sit comfortably and with devotion, read or listen to the Lakshmi Vrat Katha (story). The Katha typically narrates stories about the importance and benefits of observing the Shukravar Vrat, reinforcing faith and understanding of the ritual.
  6. 6 After the Katha, perform Aarti by gently circling the lit ghee lamp clockwise in front of Goddess Lakshmi, while chanting a simple prayer or devotional song if you know one. Conclude by bowing down, touching your forehead to the ground, and asking for forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes during the puja, expressing gratitude.
  7. 7 Distribute the prasad (sweets, fruits) among family members and others as a blessed offering. You will observe a fast from sunrise until sunset, consuming only water, milk, or fruits if absolutely necessary. The fast is a symbol of your dedication and penance.
  8. 8 After sunset and once the evening puja (if any) is complete, break your fast by consuming a sattvic meal. This meal should be simple, pure, and vegetarian, traditionally prepared without onion or garlic, symbolizing purity and devotion.
