Budhvar Vrat is a Hindu fast observed on Wednesdays, primarily dedicated to Lord Budh (the deity of the planet Mercury) and sometimes to Lord Ganesha. Devotees undertake this fast to seek blessings for intelligence, good communication skills, prosperity, and peace of mind. It is believed to alleviate the malefic effects of planet Mercury in one's horoscope and bring success in business and education. The vrat typically involves abstaining from food or consuming specific sattvic foods, followed by prayers and offerings.

How to Perform Budhvar Vrat

  1. 1 On the morning of Wednesday, after bathing, wear clean clothes. Clean your designated puja area. Mentally resolve to observe the Budhvar Vrat for the well-being and prosperity of your family, seeking blessings from Lord Budh and Lord Ganesha.
  2. 2 Sit comfortably on a clean mat or 'asana' facing East. Arrange the idols or pictures of Lord Ganesha and Lord Budh (or a symbolic representation of Budh). Keep all your puja items, such as water, flowers, incense, a lamp, and green offerings (like green gram or green cloth), within reach.
  3. 3 Light the 'diya' (lamp) with ghee or oil, signifying the presence of divine light. Also, light the incense sticks ('agarbatti') to purify the atmosphere and offer their fragrance to the deities. Silently express your devotion and intention for the vrat.
  4. 4 Begin by invoking Lord Ganesha, as is customary in Hindu rituals. Offer him water, a few flowers, and some sweets (especially modak if available). Pray to Lord Ganesha for the successful completion of your vrat and for removing any obstacles.
  5. 5 Now turn your devotion to Lord Budh. Offer him clean water, flowers, and especially green items like green gram (moong dal), green cloth, or any green fruit. You may also offer laddoos or other sweets. Meditate on Lord Budh, seeking blessings for intelligence, good communication, and peace.
  6. 6 Read or listen to the "Budhvar Vrat Katha" (the story associated with the Wednesday fast). This narrative recounts the significance of the fast and the benefits gained by observing it, helping to deepen your devotion and understanding.
  7. 7 Conclude the puja by performing 'Aarti' for both Lord Ganesha and Lord Budh, circling the lamp before their idols or pictures. After Aarti, bow down ('Pranam') with folded hands, offering your complete surrender and seeking their divine blessings for your family.
  8. 8 Distribute the offered sweets and other edible items as 'prasad' (blessed food) among all family members. Throughout the day, observe the fast according to your capacity – either by abstaining from food completely or by consuming only sattvic foods, preferably green items, and avoiding salt.
  9. 9 Break your fast after sunset, or the next morning if you prefer, by consuming sattvic food. It is customary to start with something sweet or green gram to conclude the vrat respectfully and receive the full blessings.
