How to Perform Baisakhi Puja
- 1 Begin by thoroughly cleaning your home, especially the area where you will perform the puja. Take a purifying bath and wear clean, fresh clothes to prepare yourself physically and spiritually for the worship. Ensure the puja area is tidy and free from clutter.
- 2 Choose a clean, elevated surface for your altar. Spread a fresh, clean cloth (like red or yellow) on it. Place images or idols of your family deities, or a sacred symbol like a Kalash (pot filled with water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut), representing abundance and blessings.
- 3 Light a ghee or oil lamp (diya) and some incense sticks (agarbatti) in front of the deities. As you light them, silently offer your prayers and intentions for a bountiful harvest, prosperity, and the well-being of your family. The lamp symbolizes knowledge and divine presence.
- 4 Offer a small amount of clean water from a spoon or small vessel to the deities, symbolizing purity and refreshment. Then, offer fresh flowers, especially seasonal ones, placing them gently at the feet of the idols or pictures. You can also offer a few grains of the new harvest, if available, as a token of gratitude.
- 5 Offer some sweets (mithai), especially those made from jaggery or new wheat, if customary, along with fresh fruits to the deities. This offering is a symbol of gratitude for the abundance received and a prayer for continued prosperity. Place these offerings respectfully on a clean plate.
- 6 Light a camphor or a small wick soaked in ghee on an aarti plate. Gently wave the aarti in a clockwise direction in front of the deities, ringing a bell if you have one. Afterward, sit quietly for a few moments, offering heartfelt prayers for health, happiness, and peace for all family members, expressing deep gratitude for all blessings.
- 7 Conclude the puja by bowing down before the deities, touching the ground with your hands as a sign of respect and humility, and silently seeking their blessings. Then, distribute the offered sweets and fruits (prasad) among all family members and share it with others as a symbol of shared blessings and goodwill.
