Bahi Khata Puja is a significant Hindu ritual observed primarily by business owners in India. It is traditionally performed during the auspicious occasion of Diwali, particularly on Dhanteras or Deepavali itself. During this puja, new financial account books (bahi khata) are worshipped to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, and Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Business owners perform this ritual to seek prosperity, success, and good fortune for their ventures in the upcoming financial year. It symbolizes a fresh start and a prayer for continuous growth and abundance.

How to Perform Bahi Khata Puja

  1. 1 Begin by cleaning the area where you intend to perform the puja. Choose a quiet, clean spot, preferably in your business premises or home's puja room. Gather all necessary items: idols or pictures of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, your new bahi khata (account books), a clean cloth for the altar, a diya (lamp) with oil/ghee, incense sticks, flowers, kumkum, haldi, rice, water, sweets, and fruits.
  2. 2 Place a clean cloth on a raised platform or a small wooden stool (chowki). Arrange the idols or pictures of Lord Ganesha on the right side and Goddess Lakshmi on the left side (from your perspective as you face them). In front of the deities, place the new bahi khata or ledger, a pen, and a small pile of rice.
  3. 3 Light the diya (lamp) and place it on the altar. Light an incense stick and wave it gently in front of the deities, letting the fragrance fill the air. Silently express your intention for the puja, asking for blessings of prosperity and removal of obstacles for your business.
  4. 4 Offer a flower to Lord Ganesha. Apply a tilak (mark) of kumkum and chandan on His forehead. Offer a small amount of rice and a sweet. Silently pray to Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles from your business and bless your endeavors with success.
  5. 5 Now, offer a flower to Goddess Lakshmi. Apply a tilak of kumkum and chandan on Her forehead. Offer some rice, a fruit, and a sweet. You may also place a coin or a small amount of money as an offering. Silently pray to Goddess Lakshmi for continuous wealth, prosperity, and good fortune in your business.
  6. 6 Take your new bahi khata and place it reverently in front of the deities. Apply a tilak of kumkum on its cover. Place a flower, a little rice, and a coin on the bahi khata. Then, take the pen, apply kumkum on it, and place it beside the books. Silently pray for the bahi khata to always reflect prosperity and growth.
  7. 7 Light a piece of camphor (kapoor) in an aarti plate. Gently wave the burning camphor in a clockwise circular motion in front of the deities and the bahi khata. After completing the aarti, extinguish the flame safely. Then, bow down with folded hands (pranam) to seek final blessings from Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi.
  8. 8 Distribute the sweets and fruits offered during the puja as prasad among family members or employees. Keep the bahi khata on the altar for a little while or move it to a clean and respectful place in your business or home, signifying the start of a new, prosperous financial year.
